چکیده

Streamers are ionization waves in gas discharge devices, modelled here as travelling wave solutions of a drift-diiusion model for the transport of electrons and ions. The existence of a certain type of small amplitude streamers is proved by applying results from the theory of singularly perturbed ordinary diierential equations. Global information is obtained from a large activation energy analysis. Aktivierungsenergie.

2 00 6 The multiscale nature of streamers

Streamers are a generic mode of electric breakdown of large gas volumes. They play a role in the initial stages of sparks and lightning, in technical corona reactors and in high altitude sprite discharges above thunderclouds. Streamers are characterized by a self-generated field enhancement at the head of the growing discharge channel. We briefly review recent streamer experiments and sprite ob...

Streamers in air splitting into three branches

We investigate the branching of positive streamers in air and present the first systematic investigation of splitting into more than two branches. We study discharges in 100mbar artificial air that is exposed to voltage pulses of 10 kV applied to a needle electrode 160mm above a grounded plate. By imaging the discharge with two cameras from three angles, we establish that about every 200th bran...

Application of photoionization models based on radiative transfer and the Helmholtz equations to studies of streamers in weak electric fields

Recent advances in development of photoionization models in air based on radiative transfer and Helmholtz equations open new perspectives for efficient solution of nonthermal gas discharge problems involving complex geometries. Many practical applications require accurate modeling of streamer discharges developing in weak electric fields, in which the photoionization process significantly contr...

Simulations of Low-temperature Plasmas with Adaptive Cartesian Mesh

Many problems of gas discharge physics are characterized by the presence of large gradients of plasma parameters in localized domains (streamers, filaments, ionization fronts, etc). For such problems, the ability to dynamically adapt the mesh resolution to local plasma properties can substantially increase the accuracy and efficiency of simulations. This paper describes a new tool for plasma si...
